It’s Not Imposter Syndrome... It’s Expansion Discomfort!

Let’s be honest... Every time I expand, I feel this.

When I launch something new. When I step onto bigger stages. When I shift from employee to creator. When I stop waiting for permission...

There is always a moment where my nervous system asks, “Are we sure about this?”

For years, I labeled that feeling imposter syndrome.

Now I understand it differently.

It’s not fraudulence... It’s growth.

It’s identity catching up to impact.

And I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only one who feels it.

What We Call “Imposter Syndrome”

We tend to call it imposter syndrome when we feel:

  • Like we don’t belong in the room

  • Like someone will “find us out”

  • Like we’re not qualified enough

  • Like we’re pretending

But real imposter syndrome implies deception.

Most of us are not deceiving anyone... We are stretching.

What’s Actually Happening

That uncomfortable feeling often shows up when:

  • Your impact outpaces your internal identity

  • You shift from employee to creator

  • You stop waiting for permission

  • You shift from executing someone else’s vision to building your own

That transition is destabilizing — not because you are unqualified, but because you are evolving.

Your external growth is faster than your internal self-concept.

And your nervous system doesn’t love sudden change.

Expansion Feels Unsafe Before It Feels Powerful

When you:

  • Speak on bigger stages

  • Charge for your expertise

  • Publish your work

  • Build something from nothing

  • Lead instead of follow

Your system asks,“Is this safe?”

It tightens.

It questions.

It scans for threat.

That isn’t evidence you don’t belong.

It’s evidence that you are expanding.

Check the Evidence

Before you label yourself an imposter, pause and examine the facts.

Have you:

  • Earned the credentials?

  • Done the work?

  • Invested years building your expertise?

  • Helped people?

  • Produced real impact?

If the answer is yes…

You are not an imposter.

You are expanding faster than your identity has updated.

Why High-Capacity Helpers Feel This Most

Educators, Social Workers, Counselors & Leaders.

We are trained to support others, not spotlight ourselves.

We are comfortable inside systems.

But when we begin to:

  • Create intellectual property

  • Move to a Higher Position

  • Build businesses

  • Lead movements

  • Charge for our wisdom

  • Take up space

It can feel like we’ve crossed some invisible line.

But we haven’t crossed a line... We’ve crossed a threshold.

The Real Work: Identity Integration

The goal is not to eliminate nerves.

The goal is integration.

Instead of saying: “I feel like an imposter.”

Try: “My identity is catching up to my impact.”

That shift changes everything.

Because now the discomfort is not a stop sign... It’s a growth signal.

Closing

So if you are building something meaningful and you feel that tightening…

If you are stepping into bigger spaces and you feel that whisper…

If you are expanding and your nervous system asks, “Are we sure about this?”

Let me say this clearly:

You are not an imposter... You are growing!

And growth stretches before it strengthens.

  • Stay.

  • Breathe.

  • Integrate.

The world does not need you smaller.

It needs you expanded.

Rooted And Resilient.
